No Disrespect Intended: Health Minister Appeals To Tamale Teaching Hospital Doctors To Resume Work

Ghana's Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has spoken out about the recent tensions following his surprise visit to the Tamale Teaching Hospital. The visit, which was prompted by a patient's death allegedly due to lack of medical equipment, led to a heated exchange between the minister and a doctor. A video of the encounter quickly went viral, sparking widespread debate and criticism.

In response to the incident, the Doctors Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital suspended emergency and outpatient services, citing "unwarranted attacks" from the minister and other officials. The group is demanding unconditional apologies and the provision of essential medical equipment and supplies before resuming full services.

At a press briefing, Minister Akandoh shared a personal experience to illustrate his empathy and commitment to the health sector. He recalled being treated at a district hospital after an accident, emphasizing that he has respect for health workers and no intention of disrespecting them. Akandoh stressed that respect is reciprocal and expressed his openness to collaboration, appealing to the doctors to call off the strike and work together to address the hospital's challenges.

Despite the minister's clarification, the controversy continues. The Ghana Medical Association has criticized Akandoh's decision to dismiss the hospital's CEO, describing it as a violation of due process and an abuse of power. The association has called on the minister to issue an apology.
