Cocoa Farmers Rejoice: Favourable Prices On The Horizon


Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire dominate global cocoa production, accounting for approximately 60% of the world's supply. In 2020, Côte d'Ivoire produced 44.4% of the world's cocoa, while Ghana produced 16.3%. Ghana's production peaked at 1.047 million metric tons in the 2020/2021 season but has since faced challenges.

To boost the sector and restore farmer confidence, Dr. Ransford Abbey, CEO of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), has been touring cocoa-growing communities. He has assured farmers of a favorable producer price for the 2025/2026 crop season, which will surpass that of neighboring Côte d'Ivoire. This announcement aims to enhance farmer incomes and revitalize the industry.

During his visit to the Bono and Ahafo regions, Dr. Abbey emphasized COCOBOD's commitment to competitive pricing and strengthening partnerships with farmers and traditional leaders. The CEO's tour included a courtesy call on the Queen Mother of Dormaa, who urged him to prioritize policies benefiting farmers and ensuring sustainable industry growth.

Farmers have called for reforms to make cocoa farming more profitable and attractive to youth. They have also requested support, including timely distribution of insecticides, tree planting initiatives to mitigate climate change, and incentives for women in cocoa farming. With the new pricing set to be announced in August 2025, farmers remain hopeful for a brighter season ahead.
