Mahama Cancels Fuel Allowances for Political Appointees

President John Dramani Mahama has, with immediate effect, cancelled the payment and allocation of fuel allowances to all political appointees. The move forms part of his administration’s broader efforts to reduce public expenditure.

The announcement, made on Tuesday, July 15, in a statement signed by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, emphasized the government’s commitment to fiscal discipline.

“The President believes that leadership must bear its share of the sacrifices being asked of the people,” the statement said, reaffirming the administration’s resolve to lead by example amid economic challenges. This latest directive adds to a series of austerity measures rolled out by the Mahama government.

Earlier initiatives included trimming the size of government by reducing ministerial and presidential staff appointments and cancelling satellite TV subscriptions for offices at the Presidency and other state institutions.

The decision comes just 24 hours before the implementation of a GHS1.00 levy on every litre of fuel purchased at the pump. The levy is intended to raise funds for the Ministry of Energy to procure fuel for power generation.
