ROAD SAFETY STATISTICS: Ghana Records 2,456 Accidents, 498 Deaths in Just 2 Months - NRSA


The latest statistics on road accidents in Ghana are alarming. According to Mrs. Hannah Biamah Baafi Gunn, Planning Manager for the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), the number of recorded road accidents in January and February 2025 has surpassed that of 2024. The figures are not only disturbing but also demand urgent attention from all stakeholders.


In an interview on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Mrs. Baafi Gunn revealed that the total number of accidents recorded in January and February 2025 stood at 2,456, compared to 2,250 cases in 2024. This represents an 8.7% increase, which is concerning. Furthermore, the number of vehicles involved in these accidents also saw a significant rise, from 3,910 in 2024 to 4,172 in 2025, marking a 6.7% increase.

A breakdown of the figures shows that 1,428 commercial vehicles and 1,665 private vehicles were involved in the accidents. More disturbingly, the number of fatalities recorded in January and February 2025 was 498, compared to 359 in the previous year, representing a staggering 35% increase. Additionally, the number of injuries reported during the period rose by 14.7%, from 2,552 to 2,927.


The statistics also indicate a significant rise in pedestrian knockdowns, which increased by 17.6%, from 381 to 448. These figures are alarming, and if left unchecked, they will have astronomical consequences.

According to Mrs. Baafi Gunn, overspeeding was the primary cause of these road accidents. However, other factors such as drunk driving, wrongful overtaking, and other traffic violations also contributed significantly to the rising number of accidents.


The growing concern of road accidents in Ghana demands urgent attention from all stakeholders. It is imperative that decisive action is taken to enforce discipline on the roads and save lives. The NRSA, government agencies, and the general public must work together to address the root causes of these accidents and implement effective measures to prevent them.
