THIS IS SERIOUS: Half of Tamale Homes May Be Stealing Electricity, Says NEDCo Acting MD

The Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) is facing a big problem. Many people in the Northern Region are stealing electricity. John Okine Yamoah, the Acting Managing Director of NEDCo, said that about 5 out of every 10 houses in the area are involved in power theft.

Most of these illegal connections are found in the Tamale Metropolis and Yendi Municipality. NEDCo loses about 45% of the power it distributes every month in the Northern Region. About 70-80% of these losses are due to power theft.

Okine Yamoah said that no business can survive with such big losses. He compared this to other areas where NEDCo operates, where losses are much lower, around 20-21%.

The company is trying to find a solution to this problem. They are setting up special teams to monitor the areas and arrest those stealing electricity. They will even do nighttime operations to clamp down on illegal connections.

Currently, one team is managing all the areas, which is not working well. So, NEDCo will assign a special team to each of the 11 zones. Their job will be to monitor their areas daily and detect any illegal connections immediately.
